[ctt template=”4″ link=”8DiPU” via=”no” ]Who’s ready for the Critters Cackle Contest at the @NevCoFair this week?! http://ctt.ec/8DiPU+ [/ctt]
I don’t know about you but when I think of summer I always think of the county fair. Fair days and summer nights go hand in hand, especially in Nevada County. Now, I’m a definitely Nevada City girl through and through; I love my Broad Street festivals. However, it’s a must to venture out to Grass Valley during the Nevada County Fair.
I’ve been pretty much locked in on the Nevada County Fairground’s Facebook for the last week. They’ve been sharing photos of the preparations being made (Treat Street got shade!) and it’s been torture waiting for August 10th to finally arrive. Tomorrow, the fair opens and I get to experience once again one of the best parts of living in Nevada County – our fabulous fair.
The Nevada County Fairgrounds is actually a bit famous. It was named Top 10 of the Most Beautiful Fairgrounds in California. The tall trees provide plenty of shade and the scenic Sierra Foothills offer a breathtaking backdrop. Our fair is pretty snazzy.
If you’ve never been to the Nevada County fair, it can be a bit daunting trying to plan your trip. There are several entertainment stages, a headlining event each night, Treat Street, etc. Since I’ve got the county fair on my mind right now, I figured I’d jot down my top five favorite things to do at the Nevada County fair. Enjoy!
1. Treat Street Night – The Tuesday before the fair opens
A well-known,, pre-fair night, Treat Street night is always the Tuesday prior to the fair opening. While the carnival workers and local volunteers are still setting up, the public can stroll through the fairgrounds without the crowds and take in the sights and sounds. The best part? Several local organizations are testing out their food on Treat Street (the epitome of food heaven at the fair) and you can be the first to sample some of their delicious fair food!
2. Daughters of Job Corn dogs
Speaking of fair food, our Nevada County Fair is known for the special hand-dipped corn dogs by the local Daughters of Job group. Folks seriously wait in line for up to an hour to get their hands on a corn dog. Do yourself a favor – buy two! Trust me…
3. The Destruction Derby
C’mon. How can you not love the Destruction Derby? You can’t fully enjoy fair season without hitting up at least one Destruction Derby, and the Nevada County Fair is known for our high car count and the all around fantastic show the derby drivers put on. Plus, the kids will love the derby!
4. The Livestock
Probably the first place I go when I get to the fairgrounds is the livestock area. I’m an animal person and I love 4-H and what they’re all about. My son loves to visit the livestock area! Not being biased, but our livestock stalls are probably the cleanest I’ve seen at any fair and the animals are so, so sweet.
5. The special contests!
I had to include the special contests into my Top 5. This is what our local county fair is all about – getting the community involved and showcase our talented citizens! The fair board always comes up with some wacky, creative contests and this year is no exception. Check out the Jello Eating Contest, the Critters Cackle Contest, a LIVE art challenge, and the Squash Mobile Races at the Nevada County Fair. Seriously, this is what I love about our fair – there’s something for everyone!
